About
The Project
FingerSCAN DecedentID is an advanced biometric solution designed to streamline the identification of unknown decedents for coroners, medical examiners, and forensic investigators. The app enables field officers to capture digital fingerprint images on the go, generating double-sided electronic decedent fingerprint cards while eliminating the traditional ink-print method. Built with cloud-based biometric technology and integrated with the FBI-certified Watson Mini scanner, the solution ensures secure, accurate, and fast identification. It is fully compliant with DHS 4300A and FBI CJIS standards, offering seamless device compatibility, easy data sharing, and instant alerts to relevant authorities.
Process We Followed
After lining up salient details related to the project, our team outlined a course of action that would be followed to develop a comprehensive solution. The process comprised of identification of problems, considering the relevant factors of the solution, taking note of common challenges faced, technology stack to be used and coming up with the outcome in the end.
1. Problem Identification
Investigation officers need quick decedent identification, but traditional ink methods are slow. FingerSCAN DecedentID captures digital fingerprints, generates double-sided cards, and uses cloud-based biometric tech for faster, accurate results.
3. Solution Implementation
User research and discovery workshops helped understand investigators’ needs, shape app features, ensure device compatibility, and streamline e-decedent fingerprint card generation, while competitor analysis guided differentiation and feature enhancement.
2. Feasibility Study
The solution enables on-the-go digital decedent fingerprint capture with Watson Mini scanner, ensuring DHS & FBI compliance, high accuracy, and secure biometric identification for investigators in labs, morgues, or crime scenes.
4. Challenges Faced by QSS
Developing FingerSCAN DecedentID posed challenges like capturing slap/rolled fingerprints, recording demographics, integrating secure FTP/email, consolidating case forms, enabling LES tech for easy capture, and ensuring data sharing via USB.
5. Final Outcome Achieved
FingerSCAN DecedentID simplifies decedent identification, captures up to 10 fingerprints, sends instant alerts, ensures clean images, and is mobile-friendly, providing coroners and medical examiners with a fast, reliable, and secure solution.
Problem Identification
The investigation officers often come across situations where they instantly need to capture fingerprints of decedents to identify who the deceased body belongs to. The conventional method of obtaining fingerprints and sending it for description takes longer than expected. This is why a digital scanner, which can expedite and make the identification process simpler, was needed to be created.
- Capture digital fingerprint images of decedents easily
- Generates a double-sided decedent fingerprint card
- Cloud-based biometric technology
- Eliminates ink-print method of obtaining fingerprints
Feasibility Study
We examined the client’s proposal of crafting an application that can easily attain the electronic signatures, and slap/ rolled fingerprint images of decedents in the lab, morgue or on the investigating field. Our objective, by creating such a solution, was to lighten the load of death investigators and officers of such sorts.
- On the go fingerprint scanner to use on a crime scene
- Compliant with DHS 4300A and FBI CJIS
- Ensures security and accuracy of the biometric identification
- Integrated fingerprint reader Watson Mini
- FBI IAFIS certified
Solution Implementation
To ensure a user-focused and efficient solution, we began by analyzing the project scope, client requirements, and industry standards. This phase helped define clear objectives, key features, and a roadmap for building a reliable decedent identification app.
User research
The more you know your target audience, the more useful it would be to create a user-oriented product. If we consider the most crucial component of an app, it is undoubtedly the users. Therefore we conducted research among different investigation officers and perceived their needs and pain points.

Product discovery workshop
To turn the idea of simplifying the identification process of decedents into a competent app, it was required for us to have a detailed discussion with the client regarding the project and how to execute it in a way so that it could dominate other rival apps. The discovery workshop also helped the team who are involved in the project to understand the client’s expectations and facilitate them with knowledge.
Our main objective while building this app was to make it congenial with all the devices so that the field officers would not face any compatibility related issue. Our team of renowned developers and designers mainly put the discussion into incorporating features that can easily generate an electronic decedent fingerprint card. In the end, the workshop came out as a problem-solving, doubt clearance and knowledge-sharing session.
Competitor Analysis
The competitive analysis mainly helps in grasping the significant rivalry in the market which further helps in breaking new grounds in the app industry. For that reason, we studied the apps which are operating on similar features and evaluated the potential strengths and weaknesses.
Challenges Faced by Team QSS
Unlike other software solutions, developing a fingerprint scanning solution can be quite a challenging task. There goes a lot beyond planning and consolidating intuitive dashboard. Here we have mentioned a few of the challenges that app developers faced while building the app -
- Record demographics and slap/ rolled fingerprint images
- Integrate email and Secure FTP sending options
- Consolidates multiple case forms into one
- Instil Light Emitting Sensor (LES) technology to ease the capturing process
- Easily share images & data electronically
- USB upload capability

Final Outcome
When it comes to priority, our end goal is always to develop an app that adds unmatched value to the users’ lives and meeting client’s expectations at the same time. Our team of well-versed professionals left no stone unturned to fulfil both the objectives and delivered a native mobile application.
- Expedite and simplify the identification process
- Send instant alerts to the family members of the deceased
- Captures up to 10 fingerprint slaps
- Compatible with all the mobile devices
- Handy for Coroners and Medical Examiners
- Produce clean images with no smearing

When the app is ready to live, we will be doing social media marketing, facilitate google adwords as a post marketing strategy.
We aim to integrate the Watson Mini for its high-precision fingerprint scanning and real-time biometric data capture. It will enhance the app’s ability to quickly identify individuals on-site, reducing manual effort and significantly speeding up the investigation process.
Secure FTP or uploaded to a workstation via USB connection is used for instant information sharing.
Authentication and identity, access control, encryption, secure deletion, integrity checking, and data masking are all data protection methods that have applicability in cloud computing. We have used Microsoft Azure cloud technology.
key stakeholders would be client herself, one of the architect from QSS and fingerprint scanner customers and law agencies.
Technology Stack
What Our client has to say!
" Instead of just adding their views to app designs, the QSS team also suggested some of the features that can be incorporated into the app to target more audience. They are the one who truly deserves the credit for the success of the app. "
